USC fans don't have to overthink the 2024 college football season

Trojans Wire hosts a USC football fan call-in show on Fridays at The Voice of College Football. Our most recent show on Friday, June 28 elicited a spirited conversation which became surprisingly contentious. In one sense, I suppose I shouldn’t have been surprised by the reaction, but I was. The surprise came from a caller and another commentator saying that yes, it’s bad for USC if the Trojans make the College Football Playoff but then get blown out in the first round. You can watch the show for yourself and see what you think, but yes, that was a real opinion being advanced.

Look, folks: USC hasn’t made the College Football Playoff yet. That’s 10 seasons from 2014 through 2023 without a single College Football Playoff appearance. Would it be unpleasant if the Trojans make the playoff in 2024 only to get crushed in the first round? Sure. However, saying that you’d rather miss the playoff than make it, if it means losing by 30 in the first round, is crazypants.

Making the playoff is better than not making it. Period. End of discussion. Well, not end of discussion, because we’ll spend more time talking about this point.

Anyway, here’s the show below. Judge for yourself at The Voice of College Football:
