Yankees Cut Former Dodgers Pitcher From Bullpen

The New York Yankees designated another former Los Angeles Dodgers reliever for assignment on Sunday, the team confirmed on X (formerly Twitter).

Phil Bickford’s minor league contract was selected to New York’s roster on June 21, and the veteran righty allowed eight earned runs over five innings in five appearances. In a corresponding move, the Yankees selected the contract of Josh Maciejewski from Triple-A.

The majority of the damage done against Bickford came on Saturday when he was charged for five runs in just two-thirds of an inning of relief work in the Yankees’ 9-3 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays.

This is Bickford’s third trip to the waiver wire in his career. He is out of options so the Yankees had to designate him and risk losing him on waivers before the club is free to outright him off the 40-man roster.

Bickford leaves the Yankees with a sky-high ERA of 14.40 but it was a small sample size considering the number of innings he pitched. Over parts of five big league seasons, he has a record of 11-8 with a 4.70 ERA, two saves, 21 holds, and 208 strikeouts in 185.2 innings.

The former first-round pick of the San Francisco Giants debuted with the Milwaukee Brewers before spending parts of 2021 and 2022 with the Dodgers.
