Klay Thompson is a free agent for the first time in his career and he has some options to choose from, for his new team. If that decision is left in his father Mychal Thompson's hands, Klay would end up on his former team, the Los Angeles Lakers . A user on X told Mychal that Lakers fans are hoping and praying he joins the team and the 69-year-old replied that he is as well.

    "Me too."

Another user suggested Klay needs to go to the Lakers to "fulfill his legacy" and Mychal agreed.

    "Sounds right to me."

One user also asked Mychal if Klay is joining the Lakers and he claimed to not know about that.

"I dunno... I gotta ax him."

Even if Thompson knew, he obviously wasn't going to reveal it right there. Klay probably hasn't made his decision just yet, but his father sure would love to see him wear that Lakers uniform. Back in 2021, Mychal hilariously stated that he had tried to make his son a Laker but the Golden State Warriors got to him.

"See? I TRIED to make him one...But the Dam Warriors got to him first..."

Well, that dream of his could end up becoming reality. Mychal played for the Lakers for four and a half seasons from 1987 to 1991. He averaged 8.9 points, 5.4 rebounds, 0.6 assists, 0.5 steals, and 0.8 blocks per game in that time and won two championships (1987, 1988).

Seeing Klay wearing the same jersey he once did and winning championships would understandably be quite special for Mychal. This is probably Thompson's last chance at signing with the Lakers too, so it will be now or never.

Mychal is far from the only one who wants it to happen either. LeBron James reportedly called Klay right after free agency started . LeBron is reportedly willing to take a pay cut on his next deal if the Lakers can sign an impact player like Thompson, which tells you how much he would like to have the 34-year-old onboard.

Klay himself would have to take a pay cut too, though, as the Lakers can only offer him the full midlevel exception of $12.9 million, provided LeBron takes that pay cut. Will that be enough? Well, reportedly, Klay is willing to take a discount to sign with the Lakers , but time will tell if he is okay with it.

Mychal Thompson Had Previously Told The Warriors Not To Break Up Their Dynastic Core

While Mychal is now completely in favor of his son being a Laker, it was just two years ago that he very much wanted to see him stay with the Warriors. Thompson had urged the Warriors to not break up their dynasty like the Chicago Bulls and the Lakers did.

"Joe Lacob, Peter Guber, Bob Myers – they have to learn a lesson from the Chicago Bulls, Kobe, and Shaq’s Lakers and the fact that KD left. Don’t break it up too soon. The Bulls broke theirs up too soon. They could have won another couple. For some reason, they got tired of winning championships, winning rings. Explain that to me.

"Shaq and Kobe had something special. Even they’ve admitted that they shouldn’t have left each other, Shaq said they had more rings to win. KD left to go win somewhere else. He should have stayed. As Klay, Steph, and Dray get older, they get youngsters coming up behind them who can take a lot of the slack. That way they can preserve, Steph, Klay, and Draymond’s minutes and let them play late into their 30s and still be All-Star caliber players.”

Well, his son is now the one breaking it. Thompson reportedly felt disrespected by the Warriors' contract offer and is now headed elsewhere. I think there is a good chance that the five-time All-Star, who averaged 17.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 0.6 steals, and 0.5 blocks per game last season, will regret this decision years down the road.

This is the organization that Thompson won four titles with after they drafted him with the 11th pick in the 2011 NBA Draft. I hope he at least retires as a Warrior.
