Famous Actress' $4 Million LA Home Recently Hit the Market and People Aren't Impressed

The Los Angeles metro area is filled with the lavish homes of the rich and famous, spanning over a century's worth of architecture and design history. From Edwardian mansions to charming ranch-style estates to swanky mid-century modern homes and beyond, the wealthy A-listers of Los Angeles dwelled in stylish, distinctive abodes that were "dream homes," the kind of places you'd aspire to live in if you ever won the lottery.

So when a certain A-list actress's $4 million LA home hit the market recently, people were expecting something with a little more je ne sais quoi. Unfortunately, the genuine article left a lot of people unimpressed. See what you think:

Los Angeles realtor @tonymian_ got to visit Pitch Perfect star Rebel Wilson's home after it went on the LA real estate market last month, and... well, before we start talking tea, let's go over the positives. The five-bed, five-bath West Hollywood home is cute, clean, and spacious, and blessed with some really gorgeous exterior spaces. I loved the giant privacy hedges surrounding the lot, and that backyard pool was absolutely stunning. At $4.15 million, it's pricey, but not unthinkable for a house of its size in an upscale neighborhood of Los Angeles .

So why did Tony's followers hate it so much?

Seriously- I'm not just talking about light-hearted ribbing here. People went in on roasting this place!

"Gads, how drab can decor get?! And for 4 mill at that. No thanks," scoffed @proidgaldsd2003.

"Looks like a tract home," said @amberleeb85.

"Wow that's soulless," another viewer scoffed.

A Backlash Against Modern Minimalism

I'll admit, they have a point. As Tony said, this home was built in 2015, and it shows. It very much suffers from that kind of sameish modern minimalism that's really taken over in architecture and interior design over the last decade. Everything is clearly very upscale and new, but it's all sort of nondescript and generic. Nothing about it screams "Los Angeles," much less " Hollywood celebrity home ."

Compare this to Marilyn Monroe's former Los Angeles home, which was just declared a cultural landmark by the LA City Council and saved from demolition. According to the LA Times , an earlier lawsuit opposing its cultural landmark designation argued that the home no longer included any physical evidence tying it to Marilyn Monroe. Even if that were true, though, the home itself has its own distinctive personality. Its 1920s Spanish Colonial-style architecture and lush gardens have a classic yet timeless " Golden Age of Hollywood " feel to them. Even though there are other similar homes like this in Southern California, it's closely tied to a very specific place and time. On the other hand, you can find cookie-cutter upscale homes like the one Tony toured all over the country (no offense to Rebel Wilson). Where's the individuality, the Hollywood glamor, the movie star chic?

But maybe we're being too hard on this house. Some people really like the modern minimalist look (to each their own), and we don't know how much of its owner's original personality was stripped out before putting it on the market. With the right buyer and the right vision, I could see someone turning this generic home into something unique and distinctive. The Rebel Wilson property at 822 N Sierra Bonita Ave is listed under Tracy Tutor of Douglas Elliman. All it needs is an owner to give it the right spark and turn this house into a home!
