The Los Angeles Lakers selected USC basketball guard Bronny James with the 55th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, a development that left many fans feeling surprised.

Bronny James averaged just 4.8 points per game leading many to conclude that the Lakers drafted him in large part because of the wishes of his famous father LeBron James.

Did Bronny James really earn his draft selection? New Lakers coach JJ Redick had a four-word message speaking to that question.

"I want to clarify one thing you just said, which is that Rob (General Manager Rob Pelinka)and I did not give Bronny anything," Redick said on Tuesday while standing next to James at his introductory press conference.

"Bronny has earned this," Redick added. "Bronny has earned this through hard work."

Bronny James suffered a cardiac related incident in July 2023 prior to his freshman season with the USC Trojans that was considered to be a disappointment by most basketball insiders from the former four-star California based NCAA basketball prospect.

Redick said that the Lakers' current management team, including himself, view Bronny James as "case study one" for the team's "holistic development program."

Redick added that he feels Bronny James brings several high quality attributes to the table including "point of attack defense" and shooting.
