On the heels of a state law giving California fast food workers a $20 minimum wage , dozens of workers rallied at Los Angeles City Hall on Tuesday in support of a new proposal that would give them more protections on the job.

The Fast Food Fair Work Ordinance would require restaurants to provide paid time off, predictable scheduling, a 10-hour rest period between shifts, and other protections.

“We're going to see if we can win a yearly meeting where folks can be told what their rights are,” Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martinez, who introduced the proposal to the City Council, told KNX News’ Karen Adams. “We have a lot of rights in California and Los Angeles, but oftentimes folks don't know them.”

The proposal would also require managers to fill shifts when workers call out, rather than holding the worker responsible for finding someone to cover for them.

“Too many of us can't even afford stable housing, whether that's due to unpredictable scheduling or lack of paid time off,” McDonald’s worker Jaylene Loubet said. “Through the Fast Food Fair Work Ordinance, we’re opening a pathway to change for the fast food workers all over Los Angeles.”
