Former Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Tucker Barnhart has been designated for assignment by their National League West rivals, the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The 29 other MLB teams, including the Dodgers, have a chance to claim him. The Diamonbacks signed Barnhart to a minor league deal in early Jan. 2024. On March 25, the Diamondbacks selected Barnhart’s contract after he made the Opening Day roster as the backup catcher. While he may have earned a spot on the roster, Barnhart’s play was less than ideal for the team as he slashed .173/.287/.210 with a .497 OPS, zero home runs, six RBIs, and 14 hits in 31 games and 81 at-bats.

Barnhart was disappointing in his tenure in Arizona. Jose Herrera will now serve as the primary backup to Gabriel Moreno, who was activated from the 10-day IL on Tuesday. The former Dodger signed a minor league contract with Los Angeles in late Aug. 2023. The 33-year-old only played seven games in Triple-A Oklahoma City, where he went 5-for-22 with no home runs and one RBI. He finished the 2023 season with the Dodgers but elected free agency on Nov. 6.

The Indiana native will now likely seek his sixth team in his career and his fifth in the last three seasons.
