Actor Danny Trejo involved in July 4th parade brawl over water balloon

( KTLA ) – Actor Danny Trejo was involved in a fight at an Independence Day Parade in Los Angeles that was captured on video.

Witnesses say Trejo was riding in a vintage convertible when a paradegoer hurled a water balloon at him, which hit the vehicle and exploded.

Several videos shared on social media show Trejo, 80, getting out of the car while surrounded by children and parents, walking to the sidewalk, and throwing a left hook at a man.

His target countered, knocking Trejo to the ground, but he quickly regained his footing and attempted to hit someone with a folding chair, video shows.

“There were a lot of people between him and the people who threw the water balloon,” Arnie Abramyan, who lives in the Suland-Tujunga neighborhood hosting the parade and posted footage of the altercation, told the Los Angeles Times . “He was just upset. He was yelling, screaming, mad and was trying to get to the guy who threw the water balloon.”

Other people got involved in the scuffle, including some who restrained the actor.

In the wake of the brawl, another local resident, James Spishak, questioned Trejo’s decision to confront the alleged instigator over a water balloon. Spishak told the Times that he saw the actor push women out of the way to get into the crowd where bystanders, including children, were watching the parade. Spishak said when he tried to break up the skirmish the “Heat” actor slapped him.

“It could’ve gotten really ugly,” said Spishak, who emphasized that he’s a fan of Trejo. “It would’ve never happened if he stayed in the car.”

Law enforcement told TMZ that the crowd had dispersed when officers arrived. No arrests were made, and no serious injuries were reported.

Trejo told KTLA he spent his youth in and out of prison before finding acting. He has since appeared in numerous box office hits, often portrayed as a gangster or tough guy in movies that include the “Machete” franchise, “From Dusk Till Dawn,” and “Once Upon a Time in Mexico.” He has parlayed his successful acting career into other fields.

In recent years, he has opened restaurants, donut shops and coffee shops, launched a beer label, and published a memoir, “ Trejo: My Life of Crime, Redemption, and Hollywood ,” in 2021.

In a conversation with TMZ, he called the parade incident “childish” and said that those who threw the water balloon at him were “cowards.”

KTLA reached out to Trejo’s management for comment but has not received a response.
