Jeremy Fowler says ‘Harbaugh vibes are back’ with Los Angeles Chargers

New Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh is in the thick of it this summer trying to mold this LAC squad into his own image after coming in from Michigan .

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Jim Harbaugh has his hands all over every aspect of the team this summer. During his Fowler Files segment Saturday morning on SportsCenter, he joined to report on what he’s heard coming out of Chargers camp so far.

“I’m told the Harbaugh vibes are back,” said Fowler, explaining how involved Harbaugh has been across the board in Los Angeles. “One source with the team described his style early in L.A. as all-inclusive.”

Fowler continued, explaining how Harbaugh is incorporating off-the-field professionals into his football practices.

“He brings people from the business side to talk to players after practice, people on the public relations side, so he gets everyone involved,” Fowler said.

But when it comes to actual practice time, Fowler reports that Harbaugh is a very active participant.

“He’s in on all the drills, wearing his khaki pants, getting down and dirty trying to win the drills against the players,” Fowler said.

Now, you don’t see that from every NFL head coach. But then again, Harbaugh has always been a unique person and a totally different animal as a football coach.

Fowler then dove into some of the more tactical aspects of Harbaugh’s coaching strategy this summer. Fowler reports that offense is the main focus — and more specifically, the Chargers are really trying to perfect their ground game.

“So now the focus is Justin Herbert and the offense, getting him situated with the run-oriented style of Greg Roman the (offensive) coordinator,” Fowler said.

“They’re going to run the ball a lot,” he continued, which is no surprise for a Harbaugh-coached team since his Michigan teams certainly started with the run.

“They already did a lot of the passing concepts in the spring, looked great,” Fowler said. “Now, it’s about the run.”

Herbert is a tremendous talent under center, but Harbaugh won’t go the way of many modern NFL coaches and feature a pass-dominant offense. Instead, he wants this LAC team to establish the run to set up Herbert for some deep bombs when he does drop back.

That strategy certainly worked for him back in San Francisco, when Harbaugh’s 49ers club made a run to the Super Bowl on the back of a terrific defense and a robust running game.
