Nobody ever expected LeBron James to be playing in the NBA for this long at such a high level. Going into his 22nd season, James is still one of the best players in the game, having averaged 25 points, 8 assists, and 7 rebounds per game in 2023 with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Now, with a new two-year contract signed, everyone is wondering how much longer he is going to stick around.

ESPN's Dave McMenamin asked LeBron that question recently after the contract was signed. Specifically, McMenamin asked if this were the last contract that James thought he would ever sign in the NBA.

Unsurprisingly, James' answer was a bit cryptic.

"It could be," LeBron said. "I'm not going to sit up and here say 'maybe not.' But it could be, easily."

The current contract could potentially take LeBron through his 23rd season in the league, at which point he would be 41 years old. James has often talked about wanting to take after Tom Brady and play into his 40s, and now that his son, Bronny James, is on the Lakers with him, that may be motivation enough to keep him going.

But if he sees a dip in his game at all over the next two years, don't expect a third contract to come. It feels like LeBron is someone who wants to get out while he is still among the best on the court, and nothing will change that.
