Shohei Ohtani, Tyler Glasnow Headline 6 Dodgers To Reach All-Star Game

Major League Baseball revealed the full rosters for the 2024 All-Star Game taking place on July 16 in Arlington, Texas, and six Los Angeles Dodgers will be representing the National League.

Catcher Will Smith, outfielder Teoscar Hernández, shortstop Mookie Betts, first baseman Freddie Freeman, and right-hander Tyler Glasnow will be joining designated hitter Shohei Ohtani, who was announced as the starter at designated hitter Wednesday.

“It’s great,” Glasnow said, via MLB.com. “It’s always been a goal of mine to go to the All-Star Game and I think injuries and stuff in the past have made it not possible for me to go. So to be able to go this year, especially with the hometown team and everything [is exciting].”

The Dodgers’ six-man contingent is the second-most of any team to Philadelphia’s seven. It also marks the third time since 2017 that the Dodgers have six All-Star selections, a total the franchise hadn’t previously reached since 1991.

“I think there’s six of us, that’s pretty special,” Freeman said, via MLB.com. “When you’ve got over 20 percent of your team going to an All-Star Game, that means you’ve got a pretty good team. So it’s going to be fun. Great group of guys.”

Hernández and Smith each earned their second All-Star nomination. Smith will join Milwaukee’s William Contreras as the only two backstops named to the NL squad. It’s the first time Hernández will represent the Senior Circuit after spending the entirety of his career in the American League before signing with the Dodgers over the winter.

“It means a lot,” Hernández said, via MLB.com. “This is what we’ve worked for. Obviously, coming in here, big city, big team, huge fan base. To be able to do the things that they expect me to do, help the team, that is most important for me.”

Betts earned his first selection as a shortstop. Unfortunately, a fractured hand will force the now eight-time All-Star to sit out the Midsummer Classic. He was replaced on the roster with Cincinnati’s Elly De La Cruz.
