Los Angeles Fire Department crews responded at 3:53 a.m. to 425 N. Lake St. and Temple Street where they cut ventilation holes for the smoke and heat in the roof of the converted attic, said LAFD spokeswoman Lyndsey Lantz.

It took 83 firefighters 25 minutes to knock down the flames.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
