“What it takes to what we ‘call contain a fire’ is to put a line around the fire, between the unburned fuel and the fire itself,” Nathan Judy, a spokesperson for the US Forest Service, explained. “Just because it's 0% contained doesn't mean we're not making progress on this fire.”
The fire’s steadily moving upwards toward Mt. Baldy Resort.
“The fire started down below and it wants to run uphill, and that's what it's doing, running up towards the ridgeline itself,” said Judy. The fire hasn’t breached Mt. Baldy Resort’s boundaries, but Judy noted that this outcome is a “threat.”
According to SFGate , a mixture of 275 personnel and four aircraft are responding to the Vista Fire.
“Aircraft are just a tool in the toolbox,” Judy said. “They really slow the fire progression so our ground crews can get out there and put line around the fire.”
Earlier this week, the San Bernardino County Fire Department issued evacuation orders for all the trails above the resort parking lot in the Mt. Baldy area. The resort’s Lift No. 1 was made available for evacuees. The LA Times reports that hundreds of recreationalists have been evacuated since the fire broke out.
Yesterday, on social media, Mt. Baldy Resort wrote, “San Bernardino County Fire is onsite and will stay overnight with us in order to keep things wet if the fire breaches the ridge.”
“In addition to our snow-making equipment in position, Chapman’s fire company will also be on hand to be sure we do everything we can to keep SoCals Raddest Mountain safe and intact,” the resort added.

In an Instagram story shared earlier today, a member of Mt. Baldy Resort’s team said “The fire mellowed out overnight as expected, but temps are forecast to climb throughout the day along with onshore winds, which should help push the fire in the favorable direction.”
“Cal Fire and reinforcements are en route and let's pray for the best,” he added.
An investigation into the cause of the Vista Fire is underway.
