Hoping to crack down on illegal street takeovers, side shows and street races in Los Angeles, the Board of Supervisors called on the sheriff's department and other relevant agencies to present a verbal report on July 30 about specific actions being taken to combat the crimes.

"In the last couple of years, the streets of the city of Los Angeles and the County of Los Angeles have been overwhelmed with dangerous and illegal street takeovers that cause damage to roadways, vandalism, arson, and place participants and spectators at high risk for serious injuries and even death," according to a motion by Supervisors Holly Mitchell and Hilda Solis.

The county's existing street racing ordinance, which makes it a misdemeanor to be a spectator at such events, includes penalties including fines of up to $500, imprisonment of no more than six months in jail, or both.

The motion noted efforts by the Los Angeles Police Department, which created a pilot program in which officers are deployed to designated hot spots. But enforcement actions such as vehicle impounding, citations and even installing physical barriers and other obstructions have largely proved ineffective in deterring illegal street takeovers, the motion states.

The July 30 presentation is expected to include measures currently in place and recommendations for additional efforts to combat takeovers.

The board also directed the Department of Youth Development to present a report on how to deter youth and young adults from participating in illegal street takeovers, as well as potential parental engagement and education.
