Always wanted to live like a Golden-Age celebrity—specifically, a legendary actress and sex symbol largely remembered for her bawdy one-liners ? “When I’m good, I’m very good, but when I’m bad, I’m better,” just for starters. Well, now’s your chance because this Los Angeles beach house that the late Mae West once called home just popped up for sale in Santa Monica’s Rustic Canyon neighborhood, asking a wink under $6 million.

With four bedrooms and an equal number of baths spread across more than 3,400 square feet of two-level living space, the white stucco and terracotta-roof digs offer plenty of room for any like-minded thespian to easily relax in cinematic style while enjoying scenic ocean views. One of several L.A. properties occupied by West before her death in November 1980 at age 87—including her longtime residence at the historic Ravenswood Apartments— records show the place was last sold for $2.3 million in 2004 to real estate investor John Sauter and his wife LeeAnn, a designer and entrepreneur.

Previously put up for sale by the Sauters in late 2022 at $8.3 million and then removed from the market, the charming abode also is currently available for lease at $24,500 per month.

The chic primary suite includes a boutique-style dressing room equipped with a wet bar.

Built in the 1920s and hidden away on a nearly quarter-acre parcel secured by gates and high hedges, the updated Mediterranean-style structure is fully decked out with decorative tile work, colorful wallpaper, hardwood floors, arched doorways, and picture windows. There’s also a detached two-car garage and additional parking for up to three more vehicles.

Upon entering the double front doors, a wide foyer flows to a glam fireside living room boasting French doors leading out to the backyard. Other highlights include a formal dining room displaying a floor-to-ceiling china cabinet, plus a chef-worthy kitchen outfitted with an eat-in island topped by a custom pot rack, high-end Viking appliances, and a cozy breakfast nook with banquette seating.

An ocean-view deck with a fire-pit and hot tub is ideal for entertaining guests.

Secluded upstairs, a chic primary suite features the original tiled fireplace and a boutique-style closet flaunting display shelves, a wet bar, and a Juliet balcony, as well as a light-filled sunroom that doubles as an office and a luxe bath spotlighted by dual vanities, a soaking tub, and a separate shower. Outdoors, the terraced grounds are laced with mature trees and manicured gardens and host numerous al fresco lounging and entertaining vignettes, including a roof deck enhanced with a built-in hot tub.

“Buyers will be buying a piece of history,” says Jonathan Mogharrabi, who shares the listing with Marci Kays, both of Carolwood Estates. “It brings you right back to the 1920’s with a vintage modern flare. We see the home likely going to someone who is creative and artistic, with a keen eye for design and style.”
