"I think about switching out on Steph Curry, I break out in hives" — Mychal Thompson on how the Showtime Lakers would fare against the Golden State Warriors

Unlike most old heads, Showtime Los Angeles Lakers big man Mychal Thompson believes that a modern team — the 2016 Golden State Warriors , which featured his son Klay, would beat them in a best-of-seven series.

According to Mychal , the Warriors’ 3-point shooting ability would propel them to a 50-15 lead in the first quarter against Magic Johnson’s Lakers. In addition to their shooting prowess, the Lakers icon believes Stephen Curry’s superb dribbling abilities would cause defensive problems.

    Mychal Thompson vs. Stephen Curry

"I moved my feet very well for a big man, as I compliment myself, but when I think about switching out on Steph Curry, I break out in hives,” Mychal said . “I grew up on an island, talk about being isolated on an island, stuck out there with him as he does his little dance. I'd hate that."

It’s a fresh take from an old head. After all, most retired NBA players who were part of legendary teams usually claim they would beat the wits out of modern NBA teams. They would outline their strengths but not their weaknesses. Mychal knows his height won’t be a factor against an elite scorer and dribbler like Curry.

    Evolution of basektball

Thompson claims he already knows his place in NBA history. The former first-overall pick knows that he was an instrumental part of the Lakers’ title wins in 1987 and 1988. He’s forever forged in NBA history as a champion.

But at the same time, he knows that the game and its players are getting better every day. This is just the nature of things. He doesn’t want to be stuck in the past where the Showtime Lakers were the gods of basketball.

"I am a man secure in my legacy, secure in my accomplishments,” Thompson said. “I don't have to be all, 'Oh, we're better than them.' I'm not that grumpy old man, even though I sound like that many a time, but I can admit when the new era is better than something else or that's changed from the time I played.”

Mychal’s take on the hypothetical matchup between the '80s Lakers and 2016 Warriors isn’t going to be viral, but it makes good sense. Three points is more than two. The Showtime Lakers didn’t have any real 3-point threats, while the Warriors had Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson. The twist is that they aren’t just your average shooting artists. They’re one of the best to ever do it.
