The LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games have officially announced venue assignments for over a dozen Olympic sports, setting the stage for an extraordinary event spread across Los Angeles, Carson and Long Beach. This announcement follows venue updates shared in June as LA28 finalizes its 2028 Games Plan.
“The 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games will reflect all that the Los Angeles area has to offer, and with these venue assignments, we’re very proud to bring the Games to many of our vibrant and diverse communities,” LA28 Chief Athlete Officer Janet Evans said in a press release. “The City of Los Angeles will host more Olympic sports than anywhere else, and Carson and Long Beach, which hosted competitions in previous Games, will host more competitions than ever before. The venues in these cities are world-class, and provide the ideal conditions for athletes and fans, and we look forward to welcoming them in 2028.”
The heart of the action will be in Los Angeles, where ten Olympic sports are planned. The USC Sports Center will host Badminton, and the Convention Center, which was used as the Main Press Center in the 1984 Games, will now host Fencing, Judo, Table Tennis, Taekwondo and Wrestling. Across the street, the Theater in Downtown will see Weightlifting competitions, while The Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades will offer its course for golf events.
Carson will also transform the LA Galaxy’s athletic complex to host various events. The Velodrome, an Official U.S. Olympic Training Site, will see Cycling – Track, while the adjacent fields will be converted into a world-class Hockey venue. The Stadium will host Rugby Sevens, and the Tennis Center will be the site for Tennis competitions.
Long Beach will also host several key events. The Marine Stadium will be the venue for Canoe-Sprint and Rowing, a shift from the initial plan to hold these events at Lake Perris in Riverside County. The Arena will welcome Handball, and Belmont Shore will host Sailing. Marathon Swimming and Triathlon competitions will take place at the Waterfront along Alamitos Beach, while a temporary aquatics center in the Convention Center lot will be the site for Water Polo and Artistic Swimming.
These venue assignments, which are a mix of original and updated plans from the 2017 Bid Plan, have been approved by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board and respective International Federations. The Los Angeles City Council is currently reviewing proposals to move several competitions outside of Los Angeles city boundaries.
