The search to find a replacement for Michel Moore, retired police chief for the Los Angeles Police Department, has been narrowed down.

The list of people under serious consideration has now been narrowed to about 10 names, including several current and former LAPD officials, according to the Los Angeles Times . The former police chiefs of Miami and Houston are also included on that list.

The sources also said one of the leading candidates includes Jim McDonnell, a former LAPD assistant chief and a former L.A. County Sheriff.

The outside hiring firm conducting the search is planning more interviews with the remaining candidates over the next few weeks. Then, the L.A. Police Commission will narrow down the list to three finalists.

Mayor Karen Bass will make the final choice, but the candidate needs to be approved by the L.A. City Council.
