Dodgers’ Teoscar Hernández Named All-Star Starter

Dodgers outfielder Teoscar Hernández is starting in center field for the National League All-Star Team on Tuesday, a surprise last-minute reveal that was not announced until lineups were revealed Monday .

Hernández replaces San Diego Padres star Fernando Tatis Jr., who is battling a leg injury and not expected back soon from the injured list.

Shohei Ohtani was previously voted an All-Star starter by fans. Freddie Freeman, Will Smith and Mookie Betts were all chosen as reserves. Betts and pitcher Dodgers pitcher Tyler Glasnow, who was also chosen to the NL staff, won’t be able to compete because of injuries.

Hernandez signed a one-year, $23.5 million contract with the Dodgers in January . So far, he’s delivered tremendous return on investment: a .261 batting average, 19 home runs, 62 RBIs and excellent defense in right field, allowing Betts to comfortably transition to the infield.

Hernandez was an All-Star once, in 2021 with the Toronto Blue Jays. Hernández started and went 1 for 2 with a double against Trevor Rogers in the game at Coors Field.

Hernandez is also participating in the Home Run Derby on Monday.

Fox is televising the All-Star Game, with first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m. PT from Globe Life Field.
