2 Southern California cities among top 5 for dogs in America

Dogs are the most popular pet in the United States by far and that popularity can especially be seen in Southern California.

According to 2023 statistics from PetMD , 65.1 million U.S. households have a dog, and a report by U.S. News shows that pet ownership – and pet insurance signups – have increased significantly since 2020.

The report, which analyzed a database of registered insured dogs, broke dog ownership down to a city level and found the 25 most popular cities for dogs in America.

Atop the list is Los Angeles; despite coming in 33 ^rd on U.S. News’ top 50 U.S. cities for dog owners , L.A. is home to the most dogs of any city in the country; data from the Los Angeles Almanac indicates that 561,176 Angeleno households have a dog.

That’s compared to approximately 320,000 households in the city with cats.

At spot five on the list for most popular American dog cities is San Diego; research shows that more than 500,000 dogs call San Diego home.
