Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Teoscar Hernández defeated Bobby Witt Jr. to win the MLB Home Run Derby on Monday, becoming the first player in team history to win the event.

Hernández eliminated Alec Bohm of the Philadelphia Phillies in the semifinals before facing off against Witt Jr., the Kansas City Royals shortstop.

In the final round, Hernández hit 11 home runs and three more in bonus time. Down to his last out, Witt needed one home run to tie Hernández, but clanged a fly ball off the wall.

With his wife and children watching up close, Hernández celebrated something no Dodger had achieved in the history of the Derby, which began in 1985.

Dino Ebel, the Dodgers’ third base coach, threw to Hernández.

“I could see in his eyes that it was in there,” Ebel said after the event. “Coming into this, when he asked me ‘would you throw to me in the Derby?’ I didn’t even hesitate. … I could just see it in his eyes, that if we got past the first round we were going to do this thing.

    “I had the chills.”

Mookie Betts hit 11 home runs at the 2023 Home Run Derby, failing to advance to the second round. Other Dodgers to compete in the event in recent years include Joc Pederson (2019), Max Muncy (2018), Cody Bellinger (2017), Corey Seager (2016), Joc Pederson (2015), Yasiel Puig (2014), Matt Kemp (2011, 2012), Hee-Seop Choi (2005), Raul Mondesi (1995) and Mike Piazza (1993, 1994).

Hernandez was chosen to replace Fernando Tatis Jr. in the National League’s starting lineup in the All-Star Game on Tuesday. Chosen as a reserve initially, Hernández will now bat eighth and play center field for the NL.
