    Greta Gerwig to Receive Pioneer of the Year Award From the Will Rogers Motion Picture Pioneers Foundation – Film News in Brief

    Greta Gerwig is set to be honored with the Pioneer of the Year Award by the Will Rogers Motion Picture Pioneers Foundation.

    The “Barbie” writer and director will receive the award at the Pioneer of the Year Dinner, set for Sept. 25 at The Beverly Hilton. The event benefit will honor Gerwig and raise proceeds for WRMPPF’s Pioneers Assistance Fund, a charity that provides financial assistance and supportive counseling to individuals in the motion picture distribution and exhibition community in times of need.

    The award is honored to members of the motion picture industry with exceptional leadership, service to the community and commitment to philanthropy.

    Gerwig, who has written and directed Oscar-nominated films like “Lady Bird,” and “Little Women,” is currently working on an adaptation of C.S. Lewis’ “The Chronicles of Narnia” book series for Netflix. In February, the actor, writer and director revealed that a script for the adaptation was written before “Barbie” even started filming.

    She has also received Oscar nominations for best director and best original screenplay for “Lady Bird” as well as best adapted screenplay for “Little Women” and “Barbie.” In her acting career, she’s previously starred in her husband Noah Baumbach’s “Greenberg” opposite Ben Stiller, “Frances Ha” and more. She is also set to appear in a new untitled film from Baumbach , starring opposite George Clooney, Adam Sandler, Laura Dern, Riley Keogh and more.

    The American Film Convention Adds Speakers, Films and More to Fall Lineup

    The American Film Convention has added new speakers and panels, industry partners, exhibitors and vendors and the film auction. Key staff for event operations and programming have also been named. The convention will take place Oct. 15-17 at Magic Box in Downtown Los Angeles.

    New speakers and panelists for the event include Executive Vice President of Cohen Media Group Bob Aaronson, President of Paradigm Consulting Peter Broderick, Industry Entertainment Partner Sara Bottfeld, Head of Indie Rights Linda Nelson and plenty more.

    Marketing strategies, breaking down barriers and new technology panels among others will be available at the convention. Additionally, AFC has opened its submission portal for films to be considered for auction and exhibition, with “The OJ Simpson Tapes” from Simpson’s long-time business manager Norman Pardo being the first confirmed film up for auction.

    Greenpoint Film Festival to Screen ‘Lucha: A Wrestling Tale,’ ‘Unicorns’ and More in August

    Brooklyn’s Greenpoint Film Festival has unveiled its film lineup, with Marco Ricci’s “Lucha: A Wrestling Tale” kicking off the opening night. The documentary film follows the Bronx’s Taft High School’s women’s wrestling team on their way to a championship.

    The festival, which runs from Aug. 7-11, will feature Alex Lora’s “The Masterpiece” and “Unicorns” as its centerpiece presentation as well as a documentary double feature of Kelly Moneymaker’s “Drum Song: The Rhythm of Life” and “Miwene,” directed by Keith Heyward, Jennifer Berglund, Gange Anita Yeti Enomenga, and Obe Beatriz Nenquimo Nihua for its closing night.

    Other films among the lineup include Marco Amenta’s “Anna,” Paweł Wyszomirski’s “The Green Ink,” Adrian Apanel’s “Horror Story,” Jan Jakub Kolski’s “Loonies,” Grzegorz Dębowski’s “Next to Nothing, “Paweł Maślona’s “Scarborn” and more. In total, 118 films will screen at the festival, which will also hold panels, workshops and events focused on expanding the local film network in North Brooklyn.
