The Automated People Mover project at LAX was supposed to open this year , carrying millions of fliers annually to help reduce the jams created by the horseshoe loop at the world’s fifth-busiest airport.

After rising costs and numerous delays, however, the project is reportedly still almost a year and a half from opening and will cost an additional $400 million, as reported by the Los Angeles Times .

Documents from Los Angeles World Airports staff indicate the newest opening date is Dec. 8, 2025.

This most recent delay isn’t the first time Angelenos and visitors have been told they’ll have to wait a while longer. In January, a bond agency estimated an opening date in April 2025 .

In addition to the latest delay, the price increase brings the total over the $3 billion mark.

The additional $400 million, if approved by the LAWA board on Thursday, will bring the total price tag to $3.34 billion, the Times reports.

The project itself is about 95% complete, but the additional funds will help settle past claims over the project’s delay, the Times adds.
