Last Saturday, in a charity game organized by Blue Cancer Connect, deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) defeated officers from the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD).

The Battle of the Badges charity game took place Saturday at Valencia High School and 100% of the proceeds went directly to Blue Cancer Connect, according to organizers.

LASD basketball was honored to play in this amazing fundraising event to promote awareness and early detection of Cancer in the LE community,” stated a tweet by the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department.

After Detective Mitch Speed lost his fight with cancer on July 7, 2018, the Blue Cancer Connect organization was born.

Vickie Speed, his wife, founded Blue Cancer Connect not long after her husband’s death to aid other police families coping with cancer.

Having been through her husband’s cancer battle herself, Vickie wanted to do everything she could to alleviate the financial burden and emotional stress that came with the ordeal.

As she has overcome her grief, Vickie has become more committed to helping others. She founded Blue Cancer Connect out of her profound passion for the cause.

Her experience managing public works projects with budgets in the millions of dollars made it an effortless transition for her.

Blue Cancer Connect helped people in 12 states in 2023 with things like medical bills, housing, mortgages, food, home repairs, death and burial expenses, and living trusts.
