A global technology outage involving computers running Microsoft Windows caused banks to go offline and flights to ground.

As of 7:40 AM, 4,180 flights were delayed within, to or out of the United States while 1,623 flights were canceled, according to FlightAware .

Its impacts are being felt by passengers at Los Angeles International Airport. One man told KNX News’ Jon Baird his family had a layover at LAX and ended up stuck overnight.

“It's been a nightmare,” he said. “Everyone's laying on the floor up there from our party. My 85-year-old mother-in-law, five-year-old nephew, and the rest of the group. Twenty-four people lying on the floor at the gate.”

Chris, another traveler who was heading to Australia with his family, said his flight was supposed to leave around 11 p.m. Thursday.

“It looks right now that the flights to international are delayed by at least three days,” he said.

A flight attendant said she was supposed to leave for a flight at 10 p.m. Thursday.

“And we've been sitting here waiting for the last two-and-a-half hours for a hotel,” she said.

Joe Brancatelli of joesentme.com told L.A.’s Morning News that no one should travel unless they absolutely have to.

“The airlines have all put up travel waivers, go another day,” he said. “This is just beginning to hit the worst part of the day.”

He added that he expects the worst delays at LAX to be around noon.

“I mean, the good news is this isn't weather-related,” he said. “We've had all kinds of weather delays today because of the bad weather in the Midwest and the East. The airlines are ready to go if their computers come back up.”

Brancatelli said it’s gonna take at least a day for airports to recover from the impacts of the outage.
