Home Run Derby MVP? Dodgers’ Miguel Rojas Explains His Surprise Pick

Dodgers outfielder Teoscar Hernández shined at the 2024 MLB Home Run Derby. His 14 home runs defeated Kansas City Royals’ shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. 14-13. Hernández became the first Dodgers player and the seventh Domincan-born player to win the derby in MLB history.

If there was a Home Run Derby MVP award, Miguel Rojas had a certain Dodger teammate in mind — a selection based on character more than home run-hitting ability.

“I got a mention, a special mention, to Tyler Glasnow. I called Tyler Glasnow the MVP of the night. He was with Teo the whole night, and right next to him throughout every round, every time out,” Rojas said to Dodgers Nation’s Doug McKain.

“It was really nice to see it because I know how hard it is to stay up late with the kids and the whole family,” Rojas continued. “And I’ve never been an All-Star but I can really tell how hard it is to stay that late when you’re supposed to be having a break. A lot of people were talking about, ‘Where’s the rest of the guys?’ They got to understand that they have families and they have a bunch of people there. But Tyler Glanow was right next to Teo for the whole round.”

Glasnow represents the Dodgers’ only unmarried All-Star. He and his girlfriend have no children. This made him more available to support Hernández than his other teammates. Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman, Will Smith, and Hernández all had wives in attendance. Freeman, Smith, and Hernández also have children who attended the All-Star weekend events.

Glasnow shared his thoughts as Hernández’s hype man behind the scenes of the derby on the Foul Territory Show:
