Los Angeles Chargers left tackle Rashawn Slater protects Justin Herbert’s blindside on the gridiron. He also protects him from catching strays in the media.

During an appearance on Up And Adams with Kay Adams , Slater was asked about Herbert being a quiet leader. He quickly put that notion to bed.

    Adams:

“There’s a lot being talked about, about being a quiet leader. Can you be a quiet leader? I was just talking to Lane Johnson. He’s like, I’m a quiet leader. I’ve been in this thing for 12 years. You know, Jason Kelce, he was the one who would speak and be the guy at the podium or the guy in the locker room. Can you be a quiet leader at quarterback?”

    Slater:

“Well, I think it’s funny that everyone who calls Justin a quiet leader isn’t actually on the team, so they have no idea what his leadership is like.”

    Adams:

“So he’s not a quiet leader?”

    Slater:

“No. I think, you know, Justin, he gets riled up. He talks shit, you know, he’s vocal, he’s all those things. He’s a great leader. And I also think that, you know, people, people see, you know, they see more than they hear, you know? And just the way he conducts his business, the way he goes about it, I think, you know, he’s always been a great leader.”

Herbert has always been seen as this kind of shy, quiet quarterback. Polar opposite to that of former Chargers QB Philip Rivers. But pretty much since day one, his teammates have always shut down this idea. Just because he isn’t jumping up and down on the sidelines, yelling, and throwing tablets, doesn’t mean that he isn’t a vocal leader.

Slater just further solidified Herbert as the leader of the Bolts. This offseason has been one that has seen Justin Herbert come out of his shell a bit more outside of football. Perhaps this is carrying over even more on the field, which is a scary proposition for opposing defenses.
