Former Dodgers Slugger Designated for Assignment by NL Squad

Former World Series champion Edwin Rios was designated for assignment by the Cincinnati Reds on Friday. On Saturday, he cleared outright waivers and elected free agency.

Cincinnati activated outfielder Stuart Fairchild from the injured list in a corresponding move.

Rios was just added to the Reds’ roster a couple weeks ago. He accumulated 10 plate appearances across five games but recorded just one walk and one hit while striking out four times.

The 30-year-old made his presence felt during the COVID-shortended 2020 postseason run. He hit two home runs against the Atlanta Braves in the National League Championship Series. The Dodgers went on to beat the Braves in seven games en route to winning their first World Series since 1988 against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Rios was unable to capture his successful days with the Dodgers after they non-tendered him after the 2022 season. He struggled to stay afloat with the Chicago Cubs and Red hitting a measly .081 over the last two years combined.

Before getting called up by the Reds, Ríos got into 50 Triple-A games with some success. He hit 11 home runs and slashed .243/.340/.486.

Because Rios is out of option, Cincinnati had a week to trade Rios or pass him through waivers before he had the option to elect free agency.
