Dodgers, in need of starting pitching, DFA starting pitcher

The Dodgers' biggest need is starting pitching depth, which makes it a little surprising that they're going to designate James Paxton for assignment according to a report from Fox Sports' Robert Murray.

Paxton had struggled this season, but his starts at Dodger Stadium were largely strong and having a veteran in a patchwork rotation was helpful. However, given that Clayton Kershaw is due to return from the IL and River Ryan is expected to get a call up, this was an easy way for Los Angeles to clear a roster spot.

Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times also reported the Dodgers expect to have suitors for Paxton in a trade , which they'll have a week to sort out after DFAing him.

Ultimately while Paxton had some good moments, he wasn't going to be a factor in the postseason for the Dodgers, and he likely wouldn't have been a major factor in a fully healthy version of LA's rotation.

With Kershaw returning, Ryan coming up, Tyler Glasnow set to come back from the IL and with Yoshinobu Yamamoto planning to come back this season, Paxton's utility for the Dodgers was running out. By DFAing him now they have time to work out a trade before the July 30 deadline while also ensuring they have enough healthy depth to withstand his exit.
