In his Opening of Schools address, LAUSD Superintendent Alberto Carvalho touted district successes in the last school year, including an 86% graduation rate and significant gains in language and math test scores.

"In reading, the distance from standard improvement was, on average, 4.1. In mathematics, accounting for all grades, it 7.09."

He says they will go beyond the limits in this new school year despite facing many challenges, including financial issues that will leave many schools in the LAUSD without assistant principals.

"Some would describe it as sort of a perfect storm year [with] the federal COVID recovery dollars sunsetting. That means that in excess of $5 billion will be removed from the budget of our school system."

KNX News' Karen Adams reported that Superintendent Carvalho assured there will be no layoffs. Instead, the district plans to invest significantly in the school system over the next few years.

"We are solvent for the next three years. We maintained our education programs of value to our students, we increased investments in the arts, we approved investments in technology with new devices for teachers and students, and we increased arts funding and dual enrollment program funding. So there's something for everyone despite that really dark and dire economic picture," said Carvalho.

He said they plan to implement 48 new programs over the next year, including a digital wellness plan for students, a principal academy, and innovative high-tech training models.
