Los Angeles Dodgers right-handed pitcher River Ryan is expected to remain with the Dodgers after making his MLB debut on Monday night. Ryan was called up to the majors for the first time Monday , but it was unclear if the Dodgers would keep him for more than one start due to the impending returns of Tyler Glasnow and Clayton Kershaw later this week.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said after the game that they plan to keep Ryan for at least one more start for the team. “That’s the thought right now,” Roberts said. “He’s not going anywhere tonight. It’s day to day, but I think for him, the message is just to plan for making his next start with us.”

Ryan had a fantastic debut on Monday night. He pitched 5.1 innings and allowed four hits, three walks, and zero earned runs while striking out two batters. The performance drew a standing ovation from the Dodger Stadium crowd, providing a warm welcome for the 25-year-old right-hander.

Before making the jump to the majors, Ryan pitched in Rookie Ball, Single-A, and Triple-A this season. In five starts with Triple-A Oklahoma City, Ryan posted a 2.76 ERA with 19 strikeouts.

To call Ryan up, the Dodgers made a shocking move by designating starter James Paxton for assignment on Monday. Paxton was previously one of only two Dodgers starters to make every one of his starts in 2024.

The Dodgers will have to make multiple other moves this weeks as Glasnow and Kershaw return from the injured list to the starting rotation. Glasnow is returning from a back injury that has kept him out since July 5, while Kershaw has missed the entire season so far while recovering from surgery to repair the repair the glenohumeral ligaments in his left shoulder.
