The Summer Olympics are headed back to Europe this year for the first time since 2012 when London served as the host city for the games.

Paris is going all-out in its preparations to host the Olympic Games, with plenty of outdoor events planned throughout the city in addition to traditional indoor events. Even the opening ceremony is set to span miles of the Seine River rather than simply being held inside a stadium.

The next Olympic host will look to put its own local flair on the games while matching the best of what Paris does as the host this year.

Here's a look at where the next Summer Olympics will be held and what to expect.

    Where is the next Olympics?

The Olympics are heading further east in 2028. After moving from Tokyo to Paris, the torch will head to Los Angeles, as the U.S. will be next up to host the Summer Games.

While the U.S. can claim the Olympics as their own, the games will be branded as the Los Angeles Olympics. A few events might be held elsewhere softball is expected to be played all the way in Oklahoma City but the city of Los Angeles will be the hub for the festivities.

Los Angeles initially bid for the 2024 Olympics, but the International Olympic Committee decided to simultaneously award 2024 to Paris and 2028 to Los Angeles in 2017 when they became the last two remaining bidders.

2028 will mark the first time the U.S. has hosted the Olympics since 2002 when Salt Lake City hosted the Winter Games. The last Summer Olympics in the U.S. took place in 1996 when Atlanta served as the host.

Los Angeles isn't expected to build any permanent venues for the Olympics. Instead, the city will use a few venues that are already well known among sports fans.

The Rose Bowl will host soccer, while the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum will host track and field competitions. SoFi Stadium, home of the NFL's Rams and Chargers, will play host to swimming and is expected to partially host the opening and closing ceremonies; the Coliseum is also expected to host a portion of the ceremonies.

UCLA's campus will serve as the Olympic Village, hosting athletes from across the world.

When will Los Angeles host the Olympics?

The 2028 Summer Olympics will be held slightly earlier than this year's games. The opening ceremony is set to take place on July 14, 2028, and the closing ceremony is scheduled for July 30. The Paralympics will follow in August.

The 2026 Winter Olympics will be based in Milan and Cortina d'Impezzo, Italy, while the 2030 Winter Olympics is still up for grabs and will be awarded before the games begin in Paris.
