Dodgers longest hitting streak of 2024 comes from unlikely source

The Dodgers have a new longest hitting streak of the 2024 season, and it comes from an unlikely source.

Backup catcher Austin Barnes on Thursday smacked a one-out single in the second inning against the Giants to push his hitting streak to 11-straight games. No other Dodgers player has hits in more consecutive contests this year. Making it more impressive, Barnes doesn't play every day. His hitting streak began more than a month ago on June 21. Getting hits every day in that situation is extremely tough.

Barnes is having a really nice season overall. He's now batting .278 and his .676 OPS is the third-highest mark of his career. However, he hit just .180 last year with a .498 OPS and in the five years prior to this one he was hitting just .207 with a .626 OPS.

Having him to back up Will Smith is extremely valuable for LA, particularly when he's playing like he has this year. During the 11-game hitting streak he's batting .448 with a home run, one double and a .467 on-base percentage.
