Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman has been scratched from the Dodgers’ lineup for their series opener against the Astros in Houston. He’s headed home to be with his family as his son, Maximus, deals with health issues.

Freeman’s wife, Chelsea, posted on her Instagram story on Wednesday that Maximus was dealing with a health issue that kept them in the emergency room until 3:30 a.m. While Freeman was scheduled to play on Friday and traveled with the team to Houston, he’s now heading back home.

Chelsea revealed some of the details earlier this week about her son’s illness. In an Instagram story, she wrote, “Please say a prayer for Maximus. Dr. says he developed transient synovitis from the viral infection he had All Star week. Day 3 of not being able to sit, stand or walk.”

Chelsea added in a second post: “We ended up taking him to the ER last night. Freddie met me straight from the game. He stopped eating or drinking and was very lethargic… They ran a ton of tests & bloodwork panels that thank God they all came back negative. No infection or active virus. They hydrated him and gave him anti inflammatory medicine through IV. Took x-rays & ultrasound. Everything is consistent with transient synovitis. He still cannot bear any weight to stand or walk so we will be closely monitoring him.”

Chelsea said if he didn’t improve in 48 hours he would need to go back to the hospital.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said there was no timeline for how long Freeman would be away from the team.

Dodgers Nation wishes the best to Freeman and his family.
