Reyes Moronta, Former Dodgers Pitcher, Reportedly Dies in Traffic Accident

Former Dodgers pitcher Reyes Moronta died Sunday, according to multiple reports. He was 31.

The news of his death was posted to the official Twitter/X account of the Bravos de León, the Mexican League team for whom he pitched this season:

According to his MLB transactions page, Moronta was released by León only this Thursday.

A right-handed reliever, Moronta signed with the Dodgers in March 2022. He pitched 22 games for the Dodgers that season, throwing 23.2 inings, allowing 11 runs (4.18 ERA), walking 10 batters, and striking out 27.

Moronta also appeared in 11 games for Triple-A Oklahoma City, going 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA (three runs allowed in 10 innings) that season.

Originally signed by the San Francisco Giants as an amateur out of the Dominican Republic, Moronta debuted with the Giants in Sept. 2017. He would go on to appear in 136 games with San Francisco from 2017-21 before leaving as a free agent.

The Dodgers designated Moronta for assignment in a roster crunch in Aug. 2022. He finished the season with the Arizona Diamondbacks, appearing in 17 games.

Moronta’s last major league appearance came with the Angels in May 2023. In 177 major league games, all as a reliever, Moronta went 10-11 with a 3.05 ERA and 202 strikeouts in 171.1 innings.

According to reporter Hector Gomez , Moronta died in an accident while driving home Sunday. The Dominican news outlet El Pregonero reported that the accident occurred in the Quinigua neighborhood near the city of Santiago de los Caballeros.
