Police fatally shot a suspect who was barricaded inside a home in the Beverlywood neighborhood of Los Angeles after an attempted burglary overnight.

Officers responded to the home on Halm Avenue and Beverlywood Street around 3:30 a.m. Monday, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

When they arrived they detained three people inside a vehicle near the home where the burglary call originated. Authorities later said those individuals were not arrested or taken into custody, and may not be connected to the incident at all.

The officers saw smoke coming from the house and called the fire department. Responding firefighters entered the home and found a man armed with a knife.

That suspect remained inside the home, prompting a standoff that lasted several hours.

The situation took a turn for the worse around 7 a.m. after the suspect finally emerged from the home.

AIR7 was over the scene as the suspect stood in a driveway in front of several officers with their weapons drawn. At one point, the suspect appeared to charge toward the officers, who then opened fire.

The suspect, who has not been identified, died at the scene. Police said a large knife was found near the suspect's body.

"Until the officer's body-worn, which was on during the incident, is viewed by investigators, I'm hesitant to talk about exactly what the suspect did with the knife," said Detective Meghan Aguilar. "What we know is that he was armed with it at the time of the officer-involved shooting."
