HOUSTON (CHARLOTTE SPORTS LIVE) — Huntersville native River Ryan was called up last week to one of MLB’s most prominent franchises, and on Sunday picked up his first major-league win.

Facing the Houston Astros on the road, Ryan allowed just one run over 5 2/3 innings to lead the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 6-2 win. He struck out eight batters and yielded only two hits against one of the best offense in the American League.

The win improved LA’s division-leading record to 63-54, giving them a 6.5-game lead over San Diego.

The North Mecklenburg High grad had his dreams come true July 22 by getting called up to the big leagues. In his MLB debut against the Giants, Ryan gave up one run in 5.1 innings for a no-decision.

MLB.com lists the 25-year-old as th e Dodgers’ No. 4 prospect.

Ryan had sparkling numbers in the minors this summer. Pitching mostly for Triple-A Oklahoma City, the 6-foot-2 right hander posted a 2.22 earned run average, 1.03 WHIP and 32 strikeouts across 24.1 innings.

After playing for his dad Shane at North Meck, Ryan continued his baseball career at UNC Pembroke. There, he was a two-way star as a shortstop and pitcher. In 2021, he was drafted in the 11 th round by the San Diego Padres.

Ryan’s brother Ryder is on the 40-man roster for the Pirates and has thrown 17 MLB innings this year.
