Dodgers re-acquire Rays red-hot middle infielder for second consecutive deadline

The Los Angeles Dodgers have been busy with the July 30 trade deadline looming and are showing no signs of slowing down.

The Dodgers were part of a blockbuster three-team trade that resulted in Los Angeles acquiring former utility Gold Glove winner Tommy Edman from the St. Louis Cardinals. While he was expected to fill in the gap Mookie Betts has left behind up the middle, another candidate has entered the fold.

The Dodgers are acquiring utilityman Amed Rosario in a trade with the Rays according to the New York Post's Jon Heyman. The club announced minor league pitcher Michael Flynn is headed to Tampa Bay in the deal. Left-handed reliever Ryan Yarbrough was designated for assignment to clear a roster spot for Rosario.

Rosario spent 48 games with the Dodgers last season after they acquired him at last year's trade deadline. He batted .256 with a .709 OPS and three home runs in 48 games for Los Angeles last season.

He signed with the Rays in the offseason and was putting together a career year for Tampa Bay. In 76 games he posted a career-high .307 batting average and a .748 OPS -- the second-highest mark of his career.

Perhaps more important for the Dodgers is Rosario's defensive versatility. He logged at least 91.0 innings for the Rays at second base, third base, shortstop and right field. That versatility will help Los Angeles give their batting order some depth while giving manager Dave Roberts more quality options when building his lineup.
