PARIS (NEXSTAR) – Lee Satterfield, Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs, emphasized the importance of sports diplomacy at the Paris Olympics in an interview with Marielena Balouris of Nexstar’s WAVY.

Satterfield highlighted how American athletes like Katie Ledecky serve as cultural ambassadors through programs that promote shared values and international collaboration.

She also expressed excitement for the upcoming Los Angeles 2028 and Salt Lake City 2034 Olympics, noting the role of sports in uniting people and showcasing American values on a global stage.

“It is a real unifier,” Satterfield said. “We’re seeing on the world stage all of our American athletes who are competing, and they’re sharing their stories and people are getting to know them. They’re really serving as ambassadors … to show the world more about personal stories of individuals from the United States, but a little bit about our culture, and who we really are.”

Satterfield singled out gymnast Simone Biles for praise, remarking on her resilience and public stance on mental health.

“We’re all cheering for that,” Satterfield said. “We’re all thrilled that she made that brave stand.”

The Assistant Secretary also discussed the significance of the U.S. hosting future mega sporting events, describing it as a chance to highlight American values and promote international goodwill.
