LAFB had the pleasure of speaking with new Los Angeles Rams safety Kamren Curl at training camp this week. Curl signed with the team this offseason for a 2-year deal as an anchor in new defensive coordinator Chris Shula’s system.

According to PFF “He’s played at least 700 snaps in each of his first three years, all while finishing as a top-30 safety by PFF grade each year. In 2022, he earned the second-highest grade at the position in the NFL and was the only safety to earn at least an 80.0 PFF grade in run defense, tackling, and coverage.” Now that he’s out of Washington, Curl will look to make a name for himself in LA.

What’s it like back with the guys playing football again?

I just feel good, man. It’s what I’ve been doing all my life. Playing football is the best thing I do in life.

What was the major factor that made you decide to come here?

Really, the coaches, the staff, the players we have here. We’ve got a real good team, you know. They made the playoffs last year, and I’m trying to come help.

A bunch of DBs were added in the offseason, you included. What have you tried to learn from the guys that have been with the Los Angeles Ram, like Darious Williams and John Johnson , those veteran players?

Oh, really just learning how everything works. D-Will was here, JJ was here, just how the coaching staff works on the ins and outs. They’ve been helping me a lot.

First-year Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator under Coach Shula, what can we expect from your role in this new defense?

Making plays, getting the ball out, helping the team win football games.

Looking towards the schedule, we have a playoff revenge game this year. Any thoughts on that?

You know, we pop it off at least one, you know what I’m saying? There’s a lot of buildup to it, and I like that. We’re going to go out there and get the win; that’s the mission.

I have some pictures of these two Los Angeles Rams alternate uniforms. Which one’s your favorite, the all-yellow or the white and blue?

    Yellow.

    Yeah, the all yellow?

The media rated you as one of the most underrated free-agent signings. How do you feel about listening to the outside noise?

Listening to all that doesn’t do any good for me, man. I’m just coming out here to play football, make plays, and help the team win.

Big hole on defense with Aaron Donald no longer here. How do you expect yourself and the Los Angeles Rams secondary to step up and be the anchor of the defense?

Aaron Donald is one of a kind; you can’t really replace him. Everybody else just has to step up, do their job, and go extra hard. We’ve acquired some more linemen, some young guys who will go out there and make plays, and take that next step in our game.

One of the main things we always hear about here is “we not me.” What’s one way you’ve exemplified that this week?

Just helping out the young guys, the young safeties we have here. I’m not stingy with the information; I share it because I want to see them be great just like I want to be great.

This Los Angeles Rams team is very young. Even you yourself are the 2020 draft class. How have you been trying to grow together as a team?

We’ve got a lot of young guys learning from the vets. Just taking it day-by-day, trying to get better, and not making the same mistake twice.

Going up against Puka and Cooper in practice. What’s one thing you’ve seen from them and from Jordan Whittington, DeMarcus Robinson, just a really deep wide receiver room? Who would you say is one of the hardest to go up against?

I love it. We’ve got Puka, D-Rob, and Kupp. All of them are gifted, and I love it because during the season, they go against other teams, and I feel confident I’m facing the best in practice.
