Yankees outbid by Dodgers in last-minute trade for top starting pitcher

The New York Yankees had interest in trading for Detroit Tigers ace Jack Flaherty, but the Los Angeles Dodgers beat them to it.

Ahead of Major League Baseball's trade deadline Tuesday, the Dodgers won the bid for Flaherty at the last minute, pulling off a deal that should bolster the starting rotation for the final two months of the season.

The Dodgers sent catcher prospect Thayron Liranzo and shortstop Trey Sweeney to Detroit in the deal. That, apparently, was enough to add the high-valued rental starter.

The Yankees had an interest in making a deal for Flaherty, however, it was reported early Tuesday morning that the offers they sent weren't "overwhelmingly positive ," according to Jon Heyman of The New York Post.

Adding to the starting rotation wasn't the biggest need for the Yankees, but it was on the list. They needed to bolster the starting lineup while adding swing-and-miss arms to the bullpen.

They may have achieved the latter with the acquisitions of Enyel De Los Santos and Mark Leiter Jr., and the move to add Jazz Chisholm should help the lineup.

However it remains to be seen if the Yankees did enough to add around Aaron Judge and Juan Soto.

The Yankees had a pretty mundane trade deadline, as did most teams, but adding Flaherty would certainly have been an intriguing splash move.
