Matthew Stafford's revised contract is essentially a one-year, $40M deal

Matthew Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams finally came to an agreement on a new contract last week after the quarterback asked for a revised deal and details of the new pact are coming to light. Though reports indicated Stafford was looking for more guaranteed money in 2025 and 2026, this new contract is just the opposite.

According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, Stafford actually gave up guarantees in 2025 and will essentially play the 2024 season on a one-year deal worth $40 million. He gets a $12.5 million signing bonus, $23.5 million in guaranteed salary for this year and a $4 million guaranteed March roster bonus.

Pelissero notes that this new contract allows the Rams and Stafford to reassess after the 2024 season, giving the two sides the chance to strike a completely new deal next offseason.

This doesn’t exactly signify a strong commitment from the Rams. Perhaps they declined to give Stafford more guarantees beyond 2024, so he decided to ask for more money this season with the chance to renegotiate next offseason.

Stafford, 36, is coming off a terrific 2023 season and has shown no signs of regressing due to age, proving he can still be one of the best quarterbacks in the league. He’ll get another chance to show the Rams that this season before potentially earning an even bigger payday in March.
