Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman remains on the family emergency list as his son, Maximus, battles an illness. Freeman had traveled with the Dodgers to Houston last week for their series against the Astros, but immediately went back to Los Angeles to be with his family amid his son’s health battle.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts provided an update on Freeman on Tuesday, saying he doesn’t believe the first baseman will be back for the rest of their series against the Padres in San Diego.

“He’s still kind of in it with Max,” Roberts said. “I don’t see him coming back for this series and we have the off day after this series and we’ll revisit. To be quite honest, I haven’t even broached that subject of him coming back, I just don’t feel it’s right.”

Following their series against the Padres, the Dodgers will travel to Oakland to face the Athletics. They will then return to Dodger Stadium for series against the Philadelphia Phillies and Pittsburgh Pirates.

Freeman’s wife, Chelsea, shared some details about her son’s status in a previous Instagram story. “Please say a prayer for Maximus. Dr. says he developed transient synovitis from the viral infection he had All Star week. Day 3 of not being able to sit, stand or walk.”

In another post Chelsea stated, “We ended up taking him to the ER last night. Freddie met me straight from the game. He stopped eating or drinking and was very lethargic… They ran a ton of tests & bloodwork panels that thank God they all came back negative. No infection or active virus. They hydrated him and gave him anti inflammatory medicine through IV. Took x-rays & ultrasound. Everything is consistent with transient synovitis. He still cannot bear any weight to stand or walk so we will be closely monitoring him.”

With Freeman out, Cavan Biggio and Kiké Hernández have filled in for the eight-time MLB All-Star at first base.
