I don’t know about you, but the Sunset staff has really been craving a chocolate muffin after watching 2024 Olympics coverage. If you know you know, right? And if you don’t, well, let me explain why chocolate muffins have anything to do with the Olympics.
Norwegian swimmer Henrik Christiansen went viral on TikTok after posting about his obsession with the chocolate muffins from the Olympic Village cafeteria. It all started with a TikTok where he reviewed some of the meals he’s had at the Olympic village—while he gave the pesto pasta and a pork skewer a “pretty solid 7/10” and shrimp dumplings a “soft and shrimpy and delicious 8/10,” the muffins got an “insane 11/10.”
Since posting that review, he’s created even more TikToks showcasing his love of the chocolatey muffins, including one where he’s carrying four muffins through the village and another where we get a glimpse of his nightstand that is filled with the muffins. He’s hyped them up so much he’s been dubbed the “Olympic Muffin Man.” And he’s inspired other Olympians to taste-test the muffins, too.
And even though we’re miles away from the Olympic village, the muffin craze has influenced our staff. In fact, travel editor Krista Simmons and I were trying to find out where we can get the best chocolate muffins in Los Angeles yesterday.
We’re still undecided on that front, but we realized that at least Sunset.com has some muffin recipes to feed the craving. We have two chocolate muffin recipes: a double-chocolate muffin recipe and a chocolate muffin recipe. We even have a gluten-free banana chocolate muffin recipe, too.

Chocolate Hazelnut Brownies
Okay, yes these are brownies, but those Olympic muffins are so chocolate-y, they might as well be brownies, too. For the richest flavor, use dark chocolate and cocoa such as Scharffen Berger.

Miracle Carrot Muffins
Forget dry and dutiful; these whole-wheat muffins are incredibly moist. The trick is heating the carrots and raisins in water, which softens them nicely before they’re added to the flour mixture.

Buckwheat Gingerbread Muffins
Earthy buckwheat is blended with ginger, spices, molasses, and toasty-tasting brown rice flour to make an unexpectedly light muffin that’s great with sour cream or butter.

Hazelnut-Butter Muffins
These tender, tasty muffins use hazelnut butter in place of regular butter, boosting the monounsaturated fat content and decreasing the saturated fats.

Chocolate Orange Cookie Cups
Not exactly a muffin, these are a cross between a brownie and a soft cookie. But they’ll satiate that chocolate craving. And they’re flourless, too!
