Acquiring Shohei Ohtani on a 10-year contract was one of the biggest off-season moves in baseball.

Now, the Dodgers have managed to snatch the best pitching trade target of the 2024 MLB trade deadline.

Tigers’ starter Jack Flaherty was traded to Los Angeles, alongside the St. Louis Cardinals’ Tommy Edman, Chicago White Sox pitcher Michael Kopech, Tampa Bay Rays infielder Amed Rosario, and Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Kevin Keirmaier. In exchange for Flaherty, the Tigers acquired catcher Thayron Liranzo and shortstop Trey Sweeney.

Now, that the Dodgers have secured Flaherty, many fans anxiously await his debut for Los Angeles. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts announced Wednesday the three starting pitchers for this weekend’s series against the Oakland A’s.

Gavin Stone will set the tone as he starts in the series’ first game on Friday. River Ryan will wrap up the series in his start on Sunday. Flaherty, meanwhile, will make his first start for the club on Saturday in Oakland against the Athletics.

“We’re excited,” Roberts told reporters in San Diego. “I know he’s chomping at the bit.”

So far this season, the Los Angeles native has gone 7-5, posting a 2.96 ERA with 133 strikeouts and only 19 walks. Except for River Ryan (who has only made two appearances), the right-hander boasts the lowest ERA of any healthy Dodger starter to this point in the 2024 season. The Dodgers will need Flaherty to maintain this level of production as they prepare for the offseason.

The addition of Flaherty, and the returns of Tyler Glasnow and Clayton Kershaw, will help revive the Dodgers’ rotation.

Unlike most Dodgers starters, Flaherty has remained healthy since 2022, when he endured a right shoulder strain. He also just reached the 100-inning mark, well below Flaherty’s career-high of 196.1 innings in a single season.

Flaherty’s durability and strikeout abilities will significantly improve the Dodgers’ rotation.
