Los Angeles Dodgers star Freddie Freeman ’s three-year-old son has been hospitalized with a rare neurological condition – Guillain-Barre syndrome.

The All-Star first baseman’s wife Chelsea revealed that their son, Maximus, “rapidly declined and went into full body paralysis” last Friday. She shared a post on Maximus’ health but remained hopeful that signs of improvement in his recovery will continue.

“We are very fortunate to have gotten him to the hospital in time so they could reinforce his lungs,” Chelsea wrote on Instagram. “Freddie was in Houston at the time and rushed to the first flight back home. After many tests, Max is battling a severe case of Guillain-Barré syndrome. A rare neurological condition that is especially rare in children.

“These have been the hardest and scariest days of our lives,” she continued. “Maximus is such a special boy and he has been fighting SO hard. This is going to be a journey to recover, but we have faith that he will be completely healed.

“We have been blown away by his improvements in the last 48 hours. Maximus was excavated from his breathing tube and taken off of the ventilator yesterday, which is a huge win for us. We believe in the power of prayer and we have been witnessing a miracle in his recovery.

“Please continue to cover Maximus and our family in your prayers. We really appreciate and have felt all of your support.”

At the time, the couple believed their son had developed transient synovitis, a temporary condition that causes hip inflammation and typically occurs in young boys, from a viral infection he battled during the All-Star Games. Guillain-Barre syndrome is a condition in which the body’s immune systems attack the nerves. It can cause weakness, numbness or paralysis. According to the Mayo Clinic, there is no known cure, but most people recover completely.

Freeman was scratched from the Dodgers’ starting line-up last Friday against the Houston Astros to return home to be with his family. The 34-year-old has missed the Dodgers’ last five games, seeing Cavan Biggio and Enrique Hernandez getting time at first base in his absence. Freeman is hitting .288 with 16 homers, 67 RBIs and a .888 OPS.

The Dodgers are looking to hold down top place in the National League West with the team holding a record of 63-46. Freeman has been placed by the Dodgers on MLB’s family emergency list which carries a maximum absence of seven days. If his unavailability lasts longer he can be moved to the restricted list.
