Popular Mexican slugger Isaac Cruz will make the maiden defense of his WBA super lightweight title against Jose Valenzuela at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles on August 3. The 12-round bout serves as a co-feature ahead of the Crawford vs. Madrimov world title fight, which will be broadcast on PPV via DAZN, ESPN+ and Prime Video.

Cruz (26-2-1, 18 KOs) came to prominence following a gutsy display in a losing effort to pound-for-pound stalwart Gervonta “Tank” Davis in December 2021. Since then, the 26-year-old powerhouse has won four fights, three by knockout, before moving up in weight to dethrone Rolando Romero via eighth-round TKO.

“We’re expecting the very best from [Valenzuela], but the main thing is that I’m coming into this well prepared, and I intend to come away with the victory,” said Cruz during the final press conference.

“We can't wait to get started; we can't wait to climb into that ring. I know that there will be a massive Mexican presence there, it’s going to be fantastic to hear so many Mexican fans. I know it’s going to be a challenge, but we’re going to put on a show, it’s going to be great.”

Valenzuela (13-2, 9 KOs) is a 25-year-old southpaw who was born in Mexico but resides in Renton, Washington. The challenger is coming off the biggest win of his career, a sixth-round stoppage over the once highly touted Chris Colbert, who scored a controversial decision over Valenzuela nine months earlier.

“This is what I've been training for my whole life, we had a great training camp and I’m ready to make the most of it,” said Valenzuela. “I have the height, I have the length, I have the skills, and I’ve sharpened up everything to come prepared.”
