Simone Biles outlines stance on competing in 2028 Los Angeles Olympics

Team USA superstar Simone Biles suggested she could compete at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles after claiming her third gold of the Paris Games.

On Saturday, Biles clinched the vault title with a dominant display . Having already helped Team USA win both women’s team and individual all-around gold, the 27-year-old reclaimed another of the titles she originally won at Rio 2016 after she lost them in Tokyo.

Back in 2021 during the Covid-affected Tokyo Olympics, Biles withdrew after suffering from “the twisties” , a condition that causes a temporary loss of spatial awareness during twisting maneuvers. Her decision sparked a wide-ranging and intense public conversation about mental health and how it affects even the greatest athletes.

But she has achieved redemption in Paris, with her third gold coming on the vault in which she nailed her “Biles II” vault. Brazil's Rebeca Andrade, the defending Olympic champion, took silver while Biles’ compatriot Jade Carey got bronze.

Biles, who is also in the final of the floor exercise and balance beam, has a total of 10 Olympic medals and is widely considered the greatest gymnast in history. After Paris, she already has her eyes on a return to the Games when they descend upon Los Angeles in 2028.

“Never say never!” Biles said when asked if she’s going to take part in the LA Games. “The next Olympics is at home, so you just never know, but I am getting really old.”

Biles would be 31 years of age if she does decide to compete, which is beyond the traditional prime for gymnasts. She would make history if she medaled in four years; Soviet Union’s Maria Gorokhovskaya won the all-around gold medal in 1952 aged 30, the oldest woman to do so.

With two potential medals still on the table, Biles can overtake Vera Caslavska, who won 11 for Czechoslovakia between 1960 and 1968, as the second-most decorated gymnast in Olympics history. The all-time record of 18 is held by Soviet Union gymnast Larisa Latynina.

When celebrating her all-around final win earlier in the week, Biles put on a sparkly goat necklace. She said: “It's a little ode... a lot of people love it. They always call me the GOAT, so I thought it would be really special if I got one made. The haters hate it, but I like that even more. It's just a special part of me that I have here.

“In the [athletes'] village I have a stuffed goat. Just to get a reminder, like 'You can go out there, you can do it. You've done it before. So let's go’.”
