Shaquille O'Neal 's trademark confidence was evident during the 2001 NBA Finals when his Los Angeles Lakers battled against the Philadelphia 76ers. It wasn't really a 'battle' for Shaq, though, since that term would suggest some sort of back-and-forth.

The then 29-year-old center simply hadn't felt such neither during the series nor in quite a long time, as he remarked to SLAM Magazine (Edition 54) after a dominant Game 4 performance, stating, "I haven't been stopped since I was five years old."

    Shaq's unmatched confidence

Since retiring from playing in 2011, Shaq has been active in various endeavors, particularly in the media. As part of TNT's acclaimed 'Inside the NBA' cast, the New Jersey native has often made bold and boastful statements, never lacking one bit of confidence.

This characteristic was equally evident during his playing days, arguably peaking during his iconic tenure with the Lakers.

The Purple and Gold signed the exceptional 7'1" big man to a seven-year, $121 million contract in 1996. It's safe to say that O'Neal's new home in the City of Angels, brimming with fame, glamour, and spotlight, was the perfect platform for him. The media landscape fed off the new Lakers superstar, and he gladly gave them plenty of reasons to do so.

    An unstoppable performance vs. Mutombo

Shaq also displayed his highlighted confidence in a sporting sense, especially when he received the ball in the paint. One of the many instances that showcased this came during the 2001 Finals, particularly in Game 4.

As usual, O'Neal aggressively attacked his defenders in the paint without hesitation. Throughout the Finals series, one player in particular felt the impact of this, Dikembe Mutombo.

The 76ers big man, although named the 2001 DPOY winner and one of the greatest shot blockers in history, struggled to hold his ground. In fact, it was more than just a struggle; 'Deke' found himself on the receiving end of several posterizing dunks from 'Shaq Diesel' during the game.

Even worse for the Congolese center was that he quickly ran into foul trouble when he attempted to respond with physical play. Meanwhile, O'Neal played masterfully, finishing the night with 34 points on an efficient 8-of-16 shooting from the field, along with grabbing 14 boards.

One must earn the confidence to boast, and the 2000 MVP did just that, leading his team to a convincing victory. After another win in Game 5, the championship deservedly went to the Purple and Gold. This marked the Lakers' second title, and they secured a three-peat the following year. Impressively, Shaq earned the Finals MVP title in each triumph.
