USC Student Cleared of Charges in Fatal Stabbing of Homeless Man

Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón announced Thursday that Ivan Gallegos, a 19-year-old USC student, will not face charges in the fatal stabbing of Xavier Cerf, a 27-year-old homeless man. The incident occurred Monday night on Greek Row, where Gallegos confronted Cerf, who was allegedly breaking into his car.

According to the L.A. Police Department, Cerf claimed to have a gun during the confrontation, prompting Gallegos to stab him. Gallegos was initially arrested on suspicion of murder, but Gascón stated that the student's actions were driven by genuine fear for his life and the safety of others.

"We believe that Mr. Gallegos's actions were driven by a genuine fear for his life and the lives of others. Our heart goes out to the deceased's family, friends, and everyone impacted by this tragic incident," Gascón said.

Gallegos, who is studying at the USC Marshall School of Business and is an emerging musical artist, was recently profiled by USC's Annenberg Media. The decision not to charge him underscores the complexities of self-defense claims and the impact on all parties involved.
